MIDI Mangler
A downloadable tool
This python script takes a MIDI file and plays it back like a drunk on a circuit-bent Casiotone at your local bar's Open Mic Night. There are several user-editable parameters for control. Also exports the mangled MIDI file.
Available now in beta form as a python script. Unsure how this will work in Linux or Mac. Works on Windows 10 normally and Windows 11 in a fallback softsynth mode that is in-development. Because, f*%ck M$. /s
Here’s a cleaned-up version that keeps your voice, tone, and slightly chaotic enthusiasm, but makes it clearer and more readable:
ADDENDUMB:
I should probably also mention this. If it isn’t already obvious, MIDI MANGLER, when Windows is behaving itself, supports external MIDI device control. Several of the parameters in the program are mapped to physical knobs on my controller — specifically my Arturia MicroFreak connected over USB.
These correspond to the knobs on the left side of the device. I honestly can’t remember if all of them are currently working properly. They behave a bit weirdly because the MicroFreak uses digital encoders, and each knob has its own slightly different response curve. So it’s a work in progress.
You’ll probably want to change the CC mappings in the code to match whatever controller you’re using.
The long-term idea is to get everything working cleanly with proper options so you can switch between:
- softsynth mode
- external MIDI hardware mode
- sampler mode
- or even combinations of all three
